John H. Bunzel talks about his early education, his years in the army and how those years shaped his understanding of the world. He discusses his early years at Princenton and a memorable lunch he had with the first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, while still an undergraduate student. He recollects his nine years teaching at San Francisco State and how he dealt with the tumultuous 1960s and student unrest on campus. He also goes on to discuss the challenges that arose through changes that he instigated while he was president of San Jose State College; including the redesign of faculty tenure, faculty evaluations by students and a name change to the campus from San Jose State College to San Jose State University.

Born in Eureka, California, H. Brett Melendy (1924-2008) spent most of his life in California and Hawaii. He received his Master of Arts in Education in 1948 and his Doctorate in History in 1952 from Stanford University. During this time, he also taught high school in Fresno, California.
